CONDUCTING THE WORKSHOP:

  • How many speeches does a participant do?
The goal is a minimum of 3 speeches. Most speeches are 3-5 minutes.
  • Are the speeches evaluated?
Yes, a seasoned Toastmaster should conduct oral evaluations of each speech. Some clubs assign mentors to each participant and give feedback one-on-one.
  • Are meeting agendas still used during the workshop?
Yes, you can adjust the agendas to incorporate the educational speeches that your Toastmasters member do. You can have participants take over meeting roles as they become familiar with the format of the meetings.
  • Should awards be given during the workshop?
The starter kit contains certificates for people who participated in the workshop. If your club gives awards for best speaker, evaluator, etc. you may want to suspend that practice during the workshop to not intimidate the participants.

MONEY ISSUES:

  • How much does Speechcraft cost? The starter kit is $50 from Toastmasters International.
  • Can we charge a fee to the participants?
Yes, a reasonable fee. The typical charge is $20-$60 per participant. The money cannot be used toward membership fees, but can be used toward educational and marketing materials for your club. No Toastmaster can have a personal financial gain from a Speechcraft workshop.

TIME QUESTIONS:

  • How long should a workshop be? You can conduct them in 1-2 hours per session over 4, 6, or 8 weeks.
  • What is the time commitment for a Toastmasters member?
If you are the coordinator, you will put in more time. However, each participating member will put in about the same amount of time as you would for preparing for a speech.

PATHWAYS QUESTIONS:

  • Can you get credit in Pathways for conducting or participating in a Speechcraft workshop? Yes, the speechcraft coordinator can get credit toward a DTM requirement on the DTM award application. Participants get credit toward their various paths projects and levels depending on how many speeches they conducted during the program. See the Overview of Pathways Credit form here.
